Post-Op Recovery is Structured
The first 6 weeks after knee surgery set the foundation for your entire recovery. Each week has specific goals, exercises, and milestones.
Week 1: Protection & Swelling Control
Goals: Manage swelling, regain knee bending, prevent blood clots.
Exercises: Quad sets, ankle pumps, gentle range of motion.
Status: Crutches, ice, elevation.
Milestone: Achieve 60° knee bend.
Week 2-3: Early Movement
Goals: Increase knee bend to 90°, begin weight-bearing.
Exercises: Stationary bike (if pain-free), heel slides, quad/hamstring activation.
Status: Transition to single crutch.
Milestone: 90° knee bend, light weight-bearing.
Week 4-6: Strength Building
Goals: Full weight-bearing, build quad strength.
Exercises: Standing quads, hamstring curls, mini squats, step-ups.
Status: Off crutches (with caution).
Milestone: Walk 10+ minutes without limp, climb stairs with rail.
Key Milestones by Week 6
- Full knee extension (0° bend)
- Knee bend to 110-120°
- Walk independently without crutches
- Ascend/descend stairs with rail
- Quad strength 60-70% of uninjured leg
What NOT to Do
Avoid: running, jumping, pivoting, heavy resistance exercises, pushing range of motion too fast. Complications from aggressive early rehab often set back recovery by months.
The Role of Your Physiotherapist
Your physio monitors swelling, guards against compensations (like limping), and progresses your exercises safely. This isn't optional — it's crucial.
